Long-Term Benefits of Planting a Hedge vs Installing a Fence
Initial considerations

Fence option: (rejected)
-
High upfront cost for materials and labour
-
Expected life span of 10-15 years
-
Ongoing maintenance (replacement panels, repairs and painting)
-
No environmental or ecological benefits.

Hedge option: (chosen)
-
Moderate initial planting cost
-
Required patience during establishment (2-3 years)
-
Annual pruning and watering in early years
-
Long-term growth potential and environmental value

This project has been implemented within a nature area to ensure the safe boundary of the park but without negatively impacting the wildlife and overall ecology.
A hawthorn hedge was planted. Plants were spaced closely to encourage dense growth and are protected with spiral guards and canes whilst the hedges are in early growth.

Outcome over 20 years

-
Cost effectiveness- from initial planting to ongoing maintenance. Maintenance costs significantly decreases after the first five years. No major replacement costs will be incurred.
-
Durability and longevity- the hedge will continue to to strengthen and thicken with age. Storm damage is minimal and self-repairing through natural regrowth will occur if weather damage occurs.
-
Environmental benefits- the hedge will become a natural habitat for birds, pollinators and small mammals. It will contribute to carbon sequestration and improve local air quality.
